Night Watch Extra

By: Donna Maddamma

March 14, 2009

The mind is a mysterious thing.  It holds so much information.  Tells us stories in our dreams and often plays tricks on us.  When you are no longer sure what is real and what is not how do you know then, whom you can trust?

In the play Night Watch, Elaine Wheeler finds herself in a strange and confusing predicament.  Did she really see what she thinks she saw or was her mind playing games? Could the traumatic events of her past be haunting her causing hallucinations?  Yet the images are so real she couldn’t have imagined it.  Seeking help is as confusing as what she sees.  Who can she trust?  Someone she loves, someone she respects, or perhaps no one.

Elaine values the advice from Dr. Lake her psychiatrist.  A kind and gentle woman who seems truly concerned for Elaine’s well being.  “Is she who she says she is,” asks Valerie Armstrong of her character.  “And what are her intentions?”  Dr. Lake visits Elaine often at her New York apartment to council her and explore these possible visions that Elaine is having or determine if Elaine has witness something horrible.

Wanting to believe her eyewitness account, Lieutenant Walker becomes entangled in the different stories told by Elaine, her husband, their housekeeper, and friends.  He finds himself confuting with Elaine and dodging her constant phone calls to his department.  As convincing as her story is Lieutenant Walker and Detective Vanelli find it hard to dispute the facts and the evidence they find.  “She’s taken one too many of her pills,” states Lee Rimmer who portrays Lieutenant Walker.

Detective Vanelli, however, finds himself drawn to the Wheeler family and their art collection.  He is torn between his love of fine art and his desire to become the best Detective on the force.  He is constantly mimicking Lieutenant Walker with his mannerisms but he does not completely share the Lieutenant’s opinion of Elaine.

Thrown into the group are Helga the housekeeper and Curtis Appleby the neighbor and local journalist.  Curtis’s role in this constantly twisting story is constantly changing in its self.  He is sometimes a friend to Elaine, sometimes a journalist out for the story, sometimes a curious bystander to the police and always an annoyance to Mr. Wheeler.  With his own agenda of obtaining wealth and an apartment like the Wheelers, Curtis pushes his way into everyone’s life.  More often than not he ends up causing more confusion for everyone as to what Elaine witnessed or did not witness.  John Medaille described his character, Curtis this way.  “He is a red herring, a pest and the comic relief.”

Ever lurking and always thinking is Suzy Dotson’s character Helga the housekeeper.  So protective of Elaine Wheeler (Madam), Helga will eavesdrop and snoop her way to the answers.  She trusts no one except for Elaine.  She isn’t afraid to tell everyone else exactly what she thinks although she doesn’t always need words to express herself.  This character to watch tries her best throughout the story to help Elaine see what is real and what is not.   Helga is also not afraid to use her knowledge to get what she wants from Mr. Wheeler even to the point of revealing his true relationship with Elaine’s friend.

“It’s a thriller, it’s suspenseful,” stated John Tillman, director of Night Watch.  “There are lots of different theories about what happened.”    “There are too many possibilities,” adds Ande Bewley Stage Manager.  As for the audience John states “I hope they walk away saying I can’t believe I didn’t see that coming.”

Night Watch unfolds at the Runway Theatre March 20th through April 5th.  Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8:00 and Sunday matinees begin at 3:00.  Doors always open one hour before the show begins.  You may purchase tickets on line at runwaytheatre.com or by calling 817-488-4842.  Witness Night Watch and see if you will have the answers.
